The Department's research activity, aimed at satisfying the growing demand for a medicine of excellence and modern in its content and applicability, is developed in an integrated manner and closely linked functionally to the clinical-assistance activities of the S. Andrea University Hospital and the teaching activities of the Faculty of Medicine and Psychology.
In fact, the professors belonging to the DMCM, on the basis of their strong integration already existing on both basic and applied research programmes or aimed at diagnostics and therapy, and by virtue of their care activities already organised in DAIs, set up at the Sant'Andrea Hospital (DAI of Diagnostic Sciences, DAI of Medical Sciences, DAI of Cardio-Thoracic Vascular Sciences, DAI of Oncological Sciences, DAI of Nephrological and Urological Sciences), intend to:
- to promote the advancement of knowledge on the aetiopathogenetic mechanisms of cardiovascular, haematological, respiratory, endocrine, nephrological, urological, oncological and immune-based and hereditary diseases
- develop research topics in the field of biomedicine and biotechnology aimed at identifying new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for application in diseases with a high impact in the social and health sector.
In order to achieve these objectives, the lecturers aim, also through the complementarity of their specific skills, to:
- optimise genetic, molecular and cellular technological resources
- create biobanks and epidemiological data registers
- develop innovative medical and surgical diagnosis and therapy systems, pathways and protocols
Multidisciplinarity is the main feature of the DMCM, a strong point for the development of interdisciplinary and translational topics.
The afferent professors belong to different scientific-disciplinary fields pertaining to molecular and cellular medicine, diagnostics, clinical medicine and surgery.
The integrated research activity of the DMCM is evidenced by the numerous collaborations already in place among the proposing Professors and by their numerous scientific publications that have appeared in recent years in qualified international journals and that deal with topics consistent with the Department's aims In recent academic years, the DMCM's lecturers have obtained numerous grants for research projects that have been approved and supported by various public and private institutions and bodies (MIUR, Min. Salute, AIRC, Universities, Telethon, European Community, Foundation Cenci-Bolognetti), demonstrating the breadth and versatility of their scientific expertise.
Most of the funding has come from national and foreign institutions that approve research projects on the basis of selective and comparative criteria. Based on these considerations, the Department as a whole aims to:
- further enhance departmental multidisciplinarity, promoting the most productive interdisciplinary projects and stimulating collaboration between the different s/d sectors on new scientific topics;
- plan the recruitment of lecturers and the allocation of resources allocated by the University with a view to scientific excellence
- guaranteeing an increasingly adequate and fully effective administrative and management support in the phases of both fundraising (submission of research projects in national and international calls for proposals by public and private bodies) and use of funding
- maintain and improve the already high quality level of scientific publications by promoting their growth through the use of international indicators recognised by the scientific community, such as H-index, number of citations and impact factor
- to increase the recruitment of deserving young graduates, including foreigners, for the PhD and Postgraduate School programmes active in the Department
The specific research objectives and areas of development of the DMCM are defined annually or over a period of three years on the basis of the scientific interests and skills of the proposing Professors as well as the scientific production and the ability to find resources and obtain funding from public and private research bodies.
